Distinguished Journalist in Residence at NYU Jordan Centre, former Editor in Chief and CEO of New Times, Russia
Yevgenia Albats is a Russian investigative journalist, political scientist, author, and radio host. She is currently a Distinguished Journalist in Residence at New York University’s Jordan Centre. Albats is the former Editor in Chief and CEO of the Russian political weekly New Times as well as an anchor with Echo Moskva broadcasting. She is the author of 4 books, including The State Within A State: KGB and Its Hold on Russia. Past, Present and Future (Germany 1991, Russia 1992, United States and other countries 1994-1995). She received the Golden Pen Award in 1989, the highest journalism honour in the then-Soviet Union. She was an Alfred Friendly fellow in 1990 and a fellow of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University in 1993. She was the inaugural International Institute distinguished faculty fellow for 2019-2020 in partnership with the Centre for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, an affiliate of the Weiser Centre for Europe and Eurasia at the University of Michigan. Albats has a PhD in political science from Harvard University. She is a permanent professor at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow.
